Friday, December 07, 2007Class Notes: 12-07-07Northside High School starts fall fundraiser The Northside High School PTSA is having a Christmas tree sale. The After Prom Committee of the NHS PTSA will sell the trees at Viking Stadium, 6758 Northside High School Road between 5 and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Sales will continue from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The sale will continue until all trees are sold and all proceeds will be used for the NHS After Prom Party on May 3. Students plant seeds in memory of former pupil Fourth-grade students at Back Creek Elementary planted pink tulips in memory of former student Haley Kesler who died during the summer. The flowers will be part of a larger project called "Cultivating a Better Back Creek" in which students will take part in various educational opportunities throughout the school year to learn about conservation, ecosystems, watersheds, scientific study procedures and data collection. The is funded by a Virginia Naturally grant and supported by school staff, PTA and community leaders. Roanoke Co. students help with fundraiser Roanoke County School students helped with the county's recent Phone-a-thon. Students from Hidden Valley High, Northside High, Glenvar High, Arnold R. Burton Technology Center helped raise money for the Roanoke County Public Schools Education Foundation. The money raised will go towards scholarships and grants for students and teachers across Roanoke County Public Schools
Glade Hill School pushes to 'Pig out on Reading' Glade Hill School held their "Pig out on Reading" assembly on Nov. 5. The program is a school-wide initiative to encourage students to read more. Students were able to pet Daisy the Pig from Bristol, Conn., and watched some of the teachers who volunteered to kiss the pig after students won a reading challenge. Every nine weeks, Glade Hill School will have an assembly celebrating their Accelerated Reading goals.
Northside plans session for Virginia schools The Northside High School PTSA & After-Prom Committee will host the annual "Celebrate Life" Virginia Operation Prom/Graduation Celebration Workshop for school activity organizers and vendors. The workshop is a series of information sessions for school organizations to brainstorm and explore ideas for high school after-prom activities. The event is slated for Jan. 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The NHS PTSA is searching for vendors who would like to promote their fundraising products or service at the workshop. There is no admission charge for vendors. The Virginia Operation Prom/Graduation is also accepting Honor Roll Applications for 2007 After-Prom and Graduation Celebrations. The winner of the contest will be announced at the workshop. Contest entrants must complete an application and write a summary of their All-Night Celebration, including information about their safety procedures, community involvement, innovative activities and the incentives used to keep the students involved all night. Workshop registration forms, contest applications and other materials were mailed to Virginia high schools and are available on nhsptsa.org in the Celebrate Life section. The event will be on Dec. 17 at the CiCi's at 1413 Towne Square Blvd. from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. A percentage of all sales will be donated to Life Academy to assist with furniture and curriculum expenses.
