Cadette Girl Scouts Sara Clark, Jessica Dean, and Rachel Gilbert of Cave Spring Troop 546, and friend Emma Hale presented fire safety information in a fun way at the Tons of Fun event Feb. 2 at Tanglewood Mall, according to a news release from the troop. The girls and Scout leader Debbie Clark have partnered with Roanoke County Fire and Rescue as part of their Public Education Team for the past year. During the Tons of Fun event, they prepared children's activities and safety sheets, including crossword puzzles, hidden fire hazard pictures, and home escape plans. They also helped the Prevention Office provide fire safety messages to each child who stopped by a booth. The girls took turns dressing as "Spot the Fire Dog" the day of the event, posing for pictures, and entertained children at the booth and during two stage shows about fire safety. Tons of Fun is an annual winter carnival sponsored by Tanglewood Mall in partnership with Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism, and the Department of Economic Development. This was the program's ninth year. Children 12 years and younger are treated to a free day of games, rides, arts and crafts, and hands-on displays, as well an entertainment by storytellers, costumed characters, puppeteers, and musicians, according to the release. -- The Roanoke Times |
