The Virginia Senate
The 40 members of the Virginia Senate returned to a renovated chamber this winter after two years of meeting in makeshift quarters in the nearby Patrick Henry Building. The General Assembly met briefly in the made-over Capitol in April but this winter has marked the first full session. Thomas Jefferson designed the original Capitol building in 1785 and it opened in 1788. The Senate and House chambers were added in 1906.
