The Roanoke Valley Aquatic Association held its annual county tournament Friday and Saturday at the Salem YMCA.

With more than 400 volunteers, 1,153 swimmers and nearly 6,000 people expected during the two-day tournament, standing room was at a premium.

Swimmers ranged in age from 6 to 70, but on Friday morning it was the youngsters who hit the water first.
