May is the best month of the year for seeing woodland wildflowers. The days are warm without being hot, and plenty of sunlight still hits the ground because the trees and bushes aren't fully leafed out.

The Happy Hollow Gardens in southwestern Roanoke County has 800 azalea bushes that are nearly in full bloom.
