Video: Swedish exchange student returns to Blacksburg one year after shootings
Martin Arvebro was honored to be selected as one of two students to visit Blacksburg last year as part of a weeklong foreign exchange program with Virginia Tech.
His first day at Tech was on April 16, 2007.
The 28-year-old Swedish student was in McBryde Hall when he heard a "commotion" outside, police standing around with rifles, ambulance sirens blaring and students running toward buildings to get inside.
He turned on his camera and began filming. See excerpts of the video from McBryde Hall and a 2007 interview with him and his fellow Swedish student, Carl Nordin.
A year later, Arvebro, who will graduate from the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona, Sweden, returned to Tech for the one-year anniversary.
He said he had to. To move on.
"It was essential for me," he said. "To come back and get a feel on campus in a situation where this was not the most recent event."
On April 17, he walked around downtown Blacksburg to interview students, faculty and residents so he can better understand Blacksburg.
He wanted to know, "What is Blacksburg?"
He's doing a personal documentary. He calls it, "my diary."
Even though Arvebro is not from Blacksburg, he considers himself a part of the community.
He hopes by filming people, he too can "move on."
