The Hellgate is a 100-kilometer foot race (62.4 miles). It begins at 12:01 a.m. tonight and it will take 11 to 18 hours to complete. The course follows single-track trails and gravel and dirt roads through the Jefferson National Forest while climbing 13,000 vertical feet. Along the way, there are nine aid stations for the entrants. In the past four years, about 65 percent of the runners finished the race in the allotted 18 hours -- by 6 p.m. Saturday evening.
