FULL STORY: Fort Hood shooting suspect left few impressions in schools he attended
He was born in Arlington to Palestinian immigrants from near Jerusalem who later settled in Vinton. Investigators are still trying to piece together how and why the Army psychiatrist facing deployment allegedly gunned down his comrades in one of the worst mass shootings ever on an American military base.
NEW INFORMATION (Breaking news, Updated 3:37 p.m., Dec. 2, 2009):
- Suspected shooter Nidal Hasan, 39, charged with 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in addition to 13 counts of premeditated murder; President Obama orders intelligence review.
- Hasan was a 1988 graduate of William Fleming High School in Roanoke.
- He lived in Vinton and graduated from Virginia Tech in 1995.
- Prior to enrolling at Virginia Tech, Hasan attended Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke and Barstow (Calif.) Community College.
- Hasan was granted a concealed weapons permit in 1996, according to Roanoke County Circuit court records.
- Hasan's parents ran the infamous Capitol Restaurant on the Roanoke City Market from 1987 to 1995 and the short-lived, Mediterranean-themed Mount Olive on Jefferson Street. The Hasans also owned the Community Grocery Store on Elm Avenue in Roanoke.
