- 3:25-4 p.m. Icebreaker. Let’s get to know each other. Also, tell the students about the Web site and how we’d like for them to write blogs for it throughout the week.
- 4 p.m. Leave for Washington & Lee University
- 4:45 p.m. Check in at the dorms. Meet Brian Richardson, head of the journalism department.

- 11 a.m. Ethics Objectives: Examining journalists’ professional obligations; analyzing cases
- 11:45 a.m. Legal considerations Objectives: Understanding journalists’ legal rights and obligations; the intersection with ethics.
- 12:30 p.m. Lunch, The Marketplace. Short tour of the school. Plus a visit from Assistant Dean of Admissions Erin Hutchinson.
- 1:30 p.m. Writing for broadcast Objectives: Writing a 30-second on-air reader from last night’s gas leak story; editing each other’s work.
- 2:30 p.m. How to be a News Anchor Objectives: Learning to read broadcast copy on the air, critiquing each other’s work, and some fun.

- 9:30-10 a.m. Meet Mike Riley, editor: What does Mike do as the editor of The Roanoke Times? He’ll tell us.
- 10-10:30 a.m. Your Blog: Patrick Beeson, an online producer, will show you what you’ve been blogging for and talk a little about Roanoke.com.
- 10:30-11:30 a.m. Writing time: Work on your profiles
- 11:30 a.m. Spot news: Night cops reporter David Harrison will talk about what is spot news.
- Noon-2 p.m. Lunch with mentors
- 2-2:30 p.m. Meet Publisher Wendy Zomparelli: As publisher, Wendy oversees all aspects of the company. She will talk generally about the business and why it’s an interesting career. Come prepared with questions.

- 9-10 a.m. Tour of paper with Chenita Jackson
- 10 a.m. Attend morning budget meeting
- 10:30-11 a.m. Smile! and today’s paper. We’ll take a class photo and go over today’s paper.
- 11 a.m. to noon Roanoke.com and multimedia: Online producer Patrick Beeson will talk about how we get content online, what’s involved in online production, and about the multimedia projects we’ve tackled.
- 12-12:30 p.m. Timescast taping: Timescast producer Daine Vineyard will show us the studio and how how Timescast comes together every day.
- 12:30-1:30 p.m. Lunch with Melinda Payne, director of planning and development with city of Salem
Melinda’s career has spanned several media-related fields, including various roles at The Roanoke Times, working at Channel 7 and as the public information officer for Salem.
- 1:30-2:30 p.m. Photo 101: Photographer Sam Dean will define photojournalism and take us behind the scenes to show how photos get into print.
- 2:30-3:30 p.m. Prepare for afternoon critique of papers
- 3:30-4:30 p.m. Time with your mentors: Use this time to work on your newsletter stories or maybe to shadow your mentor on an assignment.

- 10-11 a.m. Wanna be a columnist? Shanna Flowers is the newest columnist at The Roanoke Times. Her columns appear three times a week. As a female and minority, she brings a new perspective to the paper.
- 11-12:30 WRITE!!
- 12:30-1:30 Lunch with Camille Miller: Camille, director of human resources, will treat you to lunch and talk about how to present yourself at job interviews.
- 1:30-2:30 p.m. Weather with Kevin Myatt: Kevin, a copy editor, spent a few weeks this May storm-chasing with a group of Pulaski County High School students. He shares his experiences.
- 2:30 p.m. Graphics 101: Chris OBrion, graphic artist, will show you what the job entails.
- 3:15-4 p.m. Headlines and Copy editing 101: Mike Belcher, copy editor, will talk about his role in the daily newspaper.
- 4-5 p.m. WRITE!!!

- 9 a.m. Today's paper
- 9:30-10 a.m. Finding a newsroom job 101: Michael Stowe, assistant managing editor for visuals, will talk about what he looks for when seeking job or internship applicants.
- 10-10:30 a.m. The paper has more than a newsroom: There are many ways to work for a newspaper that don’t involve being in the newsroom. Sherri Harrison, of human resources, will talk about what some other job opportunities involve.
- 10:40-11:40 a.m. Panel discussion: You will meet three of the most important leaders at The Roanoke Times: Debbie Meade, director of advertising; Kathy Gravely, director of circulation; and Dan Wheeler, director of digital media. They will talk about their careers and experiences at the newspaper. Come prepared with questions for them.
- 11:40 to 1 p.m. Lunch
- 1:30- 2 p.m.The Edge: What is it? How you can get involved.
- 1-5 p.m. Work with mentors on your stories. Finish writing!! Fill out evaluations.
