OLE MONTEREY GOLF COURSE: Today 7-19-2006 my partner and were playing and the area was hit with a horrible massive flooding thunderstorm. We had payed $28 to play 18 holes and had started the ninth hole when the storm hit. When the storm finally subsided enough to allow us to try to get back to the clubhouse we were told it was their policy to redeem the difference of the 18 hole charge from the nine hole charge. According to the club official the 9 hole charge was $20 and so he returned us only $8. We asked if he would allow us to come back and play a 9 hole match another day instead of taking the return and he said "NO". I then asked if we could wait and possibly finish the round as I thought this unfair and he told us after we waited 30 minutes that the course was closing for bad weather.
I think this forced return of only $8 out of $28 was an unethical and unprofessional settlement forced on us by Ole Monterey and I do feel cheated. My advice is to AVOID this course.

The city may argue that the Airport Commission would not grant an extension of the lease for the holes that run through the landing corridor, and that may be true; however, I wonder if officials have really tried to negotiate a solution to the Airport Commissions' concerns. In a letter to me, the spokesperson for the commission indicated that one reason (maybe the only reason) the commission would not renew the lease was that trees located in the landing corridor were not maintained according to specification. It seems to me that that is something that could easily be discussed and worked out. It would be very sad to see such a fine golf course die. Roanoke City is really missing golden opportunity with Countryside Golf Course.

I grew up by the twelfth tee at Countrside Golf Course, and I must admit that I love that course. It saddens me that it seems doomed as a course. Most don't realize that it was designed by one of the top course designers in the world back in the late 60's, the same man who designed Pinehurst in NC. The course has the potential to easily be restored to its original beauty and challenge. Countryside has the real potential to become a real positive financial magnet for our community based on its design, location, and visibility. To toss it away with the callous reasoning that "People need to realize that the golf course was up for sale. Somebody was going to buy it," (D. Burcham)is a weak reasoning...more continued.

My favorite course in the area is Olde Mill Golf Course at Groundhog Mountain. Good layout, quiet area, beautiful scenery and well kept. It is tough though, so if you've never played there and are a high handicap, take plenty of balls. Water is in play on 14 holes. Even though I haven't played there in years, I alway liked Great Oaks Country Club in Floyd. Also, in the Roanoke Valley itself, there are no friendlier people than the King Family at Blue Hills. I hope Roanoke can keep Countryside open. It's not one of my favorites, but I believe the City of Roanoke and the surrounding community need that golf course.
