Roundabouts planned for Roanoke and Blacksburg
Some neighborhoods in Roanoke, Roanoke County and Blacksburg could soon become home to intersections governed not by stop signs or traffic lights but by concrete circles and yield signs.
That’s because transportation engineers have proposed building at least eight traffic roundabouts in the region within the next five years.

Talk about roundabouts and their potential for coming to the area. Will they help with traffic?

I think the roundabout at Prices Forks and North Main Street Blacksburg is a great idea.
I have tested both of the crosswalks on North Main and was nearly hit twice by speeding drivers approaching College Avenue.
With the approach of a fantastic performing arts complex for Virginia Tech on North Main Street and the potential injury to 500 patrons Blacksburg needs to slow down traffic as it drives into the new :"Arts District" There have been 94 plus wrecks
and pedestrian accidents and Brandon Steel
is the man to help this project happen. The potential of beautification of ramps and sidewalks will benefit the downtown merchants
and show the town councils commitment to the downtown sector. Please send your support!

I have noticed the tire marks, too. Funny. More seriously, trees have been planted in many of these islands and chicanes. The trees are small now, but what happens when they are big enough to stop a car (or motorcycle)? I always thought trees were one of the biggest traffic hazards of all. When a car hits a tree, everybody loses.

Aren't most of the Roanoke ones in Southeast? Apparently those people did so well with the traffic calming. It always amuses me to drive down Elm Ave toward Vinton and see all of the tire marks on the curbs...evidence that at least some folks did not do well with traffic calming.

maybe we can put up a video camera and submit the results to America's Funniest Videos.

We lived in Kent, England for over 3 months in the fall of 2006 and we drove their highways daily. They use the roundabout at many intersections all across the country, and in the towns as well. We found them to be an easy way to navigate the roads, and with good signage before and at the roundabout it is easy to be on the move and navigate the traffic without accidents. We thought that there should be more of them in the USA and now with this proposal we will see some in our own region. I applaud this effort, it is overdue as a solution to traffic flow, and fuel savings as well.

The main reason for the signal at Southgate & Duckpond is because VT uses both lanes of SOuthgate Drive to flood people out of major events like football games & graduations, and a roundabout would have taken away the option of using both lanes for exiting traffic. Otherwise, one would have worked perfectly there too. But I agree, Prices Fork & North Main is the WRONG location for one. The volume of traffic in that location, combined with signals at nearby intersections and how much traffic backs up at both signals, is going to cause major problems. Roundabouts are a great tool in the right location. Main Street & Prices Fork is not the right location.

I live in Blacksburg on Givens Ln and I really don't see why they need to waste money on roundabouts, Stop signs are a lot cheaper. As for Prices Fork and North Main St. that is probably the worst possible location in town for a roundabout. Traffic will back up from the traffic light at Progress St, into the roundabout. And really if roundabouts are so good why did they put a traffic light in on campus at Southgate and Duck Pond Drive?
