Blue Ridge Parkway battles dwindling funds
The National Park Service is considering a series of proposals that will direct traffic and development along the parkway for the next two decades. Such proposals include closing the campground on Roanoke Mountain and building walking and biking trails along beside the parkway.

How do you use the Blue Ridge Parkway? Share your thoughts on the proposals and the parkway's future.

Walker. I think you are confusing the BRP with the Interstate system though if you drive the section of the BRP between 220 and 460 during rush hours you will see that many are having that same confusion.
I agree that the campground would be much more attractive with showers. RV's are probably dinosaurs and will be driven to extinction by gas prices. The BRP has always been antagonistic towards mountain bikers. They probably still see them as gonzo, testosterone driven, green haired denezins of some long ago Mountain Dew commercial.
The City of Roanoke needs to jump on this thing and see what needs to be done to evolve this campground...not close it. Roanoke does not need this embarassment of losing it's only decent campground.

We camp at the Peaks of Otter frequently throughout the summer months. We really enjoy camping out and the different places that are available. It is so much nicer to camp in the BRPW campgrounds because it is in the woods.

We have heard that a lot of people don't like to camp in the BR Parkway campgrounds because there are no showers.

Camping is serene and beautiful. Don't take away what some use as mini-vacations because at this time it is becaoming very costly to do anything.

Many people go to Roanoke Mountain on Saturday and Sunday evenings for the live music. What will happen to that.

Don't close the campground but the other proposals sound pretty good.

Not sure I like the idea of closing the Roanoke Mountain campground, but more hiking and biking trails would be fine.

Does anyone know the original idea behind creating the Parkway?

I have heard that it was built in case we were ever invaded, to provide high ground and another way to transport military equipment, soldiers, etc. Just curious.
