The unfortunate reality is that VFOIA is one of the few ways to get real information any more. One certainly can't rely on the media to report accurately. Since when did "journalism" mean simply quoting the official police press release?

Sorry Thumper,

The "new" RT, you know, the one that is out to increase revenue and circulation by getting rid of any writers who were actually in touch with reality and in touch with the community they serve (Joe Kennedy comes to mind), doesn't care about the message boards or blogs either. It seems they are less concerned with what the readership wants than they are with pushing a very narrow, left-wing social agenda

Information comes with a hefty price

Yes, this citizens' right is just the ticket to make sure everything in our government is "open" for all citizens to scrutinize. There are just a few caveats to this "free" information. First, it is not "free."
"A public body may make reasonable charges not to exceed its actual cost"
Your government will charge you big bucks for their secrets -- excuse me, I mean "information" -- that we citizens should not trouble our small, deficient minds about. " records shall be estimated in advance at the request of the citizen."
You must be notified if the cost will exceed $200 - the $200 is used as a deterrent. Basically, they hope you will just go away.

I wonder how Roanoke City/County did - it was not mentioned. From the Roanoke Times - thought this was interesting:

House votes to exempt Assembly from FOI act

Ironically, freshman Del. Onzlee Ware of Roanoke was one of only two Democrats who voted for Griffith's bill. Ware succeeded Roanoke Democrat Clifton "Chip" Woodrum, who started the chain of events that drove Griffith to draft the legislation.

Maybe it is possible to get information that you are entitled to from some goverment agencies, But the School boards are Not among them, at least not in Montgomery County! Most people want information for their families to base certaindecisions on. What is crime rate in a given area where they live? What is the rate and severity of violence at a given school where their children attend? Do their children have a Qualified teacher? What are the real SoL test scores, not the County spin on them. Real test scores for my kids school still are not available, just that 16 out of 20 schools are accredited, and how good that is. Last year before Tiffany Anderson came there were 18 out of 20 schools accredited. That sounds like a LOSS to me!
