August 18, 2013: A driving trip through Ireland

In June, Brad Crawford and Lewis Clark of Roanoke took a driving vacation in Ireland, racking up 1,496 miles in 10 days. “The adventure began in Dublin across the country to Galway and back to Dublin,” wrote Brad. “The scenery was amazing and the people were fantastic! We did the castle tour, staying in three castle hotels, two standard hotels and two B&Bs. The driving took some getting used to. We had two very close calls and a busted tire. I think I was driving too fast when I hit that curb, and then we finally got it! Thanks to some roundabout education from the mechanic and then everything was fine! We would definitely recommend this trip to anyone!”

August 11, 2013: Cunninghams and Grubbs visit Las Vegas

In May, Benny and Wanda Cunningham and Donnie and Linda Grubb and their daughter, Hannah Grubb — all of Christiansburg — drove to Las Vegas to visit the Grubbs’ son, Richie Grubb, and his children, Alyssa and Justin Grubb. “It was our first road trip this far away from home,” wrote Wanda Cunningham. “So we drove to the California state line to have bragging rights to say that we traveled all the way across the USA! We had an awesome visit, sightseeing the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon and Las Vegas as well as various places along the way such as the Route 66 Museum in Clinton, Okla., and Graceland in Memphis, Tenn.”

August 4, 2013: Campbells' trip to Spain and Portugal

In April, Mary and Stephen Campbell of Smith Mountain Lake traveled to Spain and Portugal.

“We visited Madrid, Toledo, Segovia, Salamanca and Avila in Spain, and Fatima, Lisbon and Sintra in Portugal,” wrote Stephen.

“A highlight was a day in Toledo, an ancient walled city, with our friend Pedro Ruiz, who is a native of Toledo. He was able to give us firsthand knowledge of the Spanish culture and traditions and told us the history of the town as we strolled the cobbled streets and visited all the historic sites. Of course, we stopped for tapas along the way.”
