Tim and Renee Thornhill of Roanoke traveled to Guatemala in November to visit Renee’s relatives, hike its volcanoes and experience its friendly culture.

“Pacaya was an interesting volcano, smoking on the day we hiked through its hardened lava field,” they wrote. “Our trail on volcano Zunil, at nearly 12,000 feet, was an ancient Mayan trade route that gave an amazing sunrise view of 14 volcanoes from the summit. Semuc Champey is a beautiful, remote natural area with turquoise pools formed as a rushing river disappears into an underground cave. We celebrated All Saints Day with our relatives with a special Guatemalan meal called fiambre. Guatemala is a beautiful, colorful country.”
