Last year, we launched our first Best of Holiday Shopping poll to great success.

We asked readers to vote online for their favorite places to shop, to eat, to buy “Only in Roanoke” souvenirs so we can share the results to help others navigate the holiday shopping terrain.

Through the poll, we discovered several unique businesses in our region — and we hope to find more of them this year.

In our second poll, you’ll find the winners from last year’s poll in some of the categories.

We’re also introducing a few new categories, including the best local places to find vintage and antique gifts, to buy a party dress, or to shop for a last-minute gift.

You can vote in the poll from today through Oct. 11 at www.roanoke.com/bestof. You can write in nominations as well.

Here’s a quick FAQ:

Q: Who is eligible?

To win, businesses must have a physical store located in our region — anywhere from the Hot Springs and Lexington area to Lynchburg, from Smith Mountain Lake to Wytheville, and of course the Roanoke and New River valleys.

The “daytrip shopping destination” is an exception to this rule.

Q: How many businesses can I vote for?

We encourage you to check out all the categories and vote for your favorites in as many of them as possible. You can vote once a day, and if you cast at least two votes, you’ll be entered to win some great prizes (read on for details).

We’re using a new, user-friendly voting tool this year that will be accessible on all devices — from mobile to desktop. If you’ve bought a Daily Deal from us previously, just log in with that email address and password. If you haven’t, registration is quick and easy.

Q: How are winners selected?

It’s all about readers’ choice. In each category, the top nominees are calculated based solely on votes submitted by readers. We will name a gold, silver and bronze winner in each category. There also will be honorable mentions.

Q: When will winners be announced?

We will publish the results in a special section inserted into The Roanoke Times on Sunday, Nov. 10, just in time to help you plan your holiday shopping and activities. The section will also have great tips on holiday entertaining and highlights of some of the great shopping areas in our region.

Q: Have other questions or suggestions?

We want to hear from you. Email us at bestof@roanoke.com

Share away: Once you’ve submitted your suggestions, please share our poll with all your Facebook friends and Twitter (#bestofswva) followers. The more nominations we get, the better the guide will be.

Prizes for voting:
You need to vote by Sept. 15 to be entered to win our first prize: a family four-pack of Broadway in Roanoke 2013-14 season passes at Roanoke Civic Center. The shows include “Disney’s Beauty and The Beast” “Hello Dolly,” “Cirque Dreams Holidaze,” “Mamma Mia” and “Hair.”

Stay tuned for other great prizes!
