FRIDAYBukuru Celestin CD ReleaseBukuru Celestin and his family arrived in America as refugees from Burundi almost six years ago. Since then, he has attended Music Lab at Jefferson Center where, by the time he graduated, his African gospel/folk music had caught the ear of international jazz-funk bassist and producer Michael League, of Snarky Puppy. Celestin and League collaborated on an album, “Amkeni,” released on the groundUp/Ropeadope label. The disc came out in late July and debuted at No. 8 on the iTunes world music charts.
Celestin, the Music Lab and a band loaded with some of Virginia’s finest players will celebrate the album with a CD release party. Pay the $12 admission fee and get a free copy of “Amkeni,” a wonderful fusion of Celestin’s African music, Southern gospel and funky jazz.
“It was amazing, the way he turned it to be,” Celestin said of the disc. “It was perfectly the way I wanted it to be.”
League and his Snarky Puppy bandmates are on their own tour this month and can’t be here. League said in a phone call last month that the record remained in that iTunes chart’s top 10 for most of the first week of its release, “which is amazing, especially for a 20-year-old artist’s first record.”
“It made me so happy to see that for him, because I was 20 when I made my first record, and it took me nine years of being a professional musician for anything that I had done to get into the top 10 of any chart, for that matter.”
Celestin’s singing kin, Furaha, Elvanie and Ephrasie, will back him up, as usual.
