Hope for the Tape Deck Label Premiere Party
With The Sad Cobras, The Missionaries, Psalmships
An independent record label bringing what its principals call “earhole treasures” from Philadelphia and Roanoke hopes to take advantage of the fact that a lot of us still have cassette decks in our cars and homes (this reporter surely does). This party features the one-off reunion of Roanoke band The Sad Cobras, which made some gorgeous and sometimes wacky music and featured inimitable vocals from Paige “Deedraye Halliston” Hodges. The rest of the band — Daniel Cundiff (Eternal Summers), Jonathan Woods (Eternal Summers) and Sam Lunsford (The Young Sinclairs) can make some righteous noise, too. Go to blogs.roanoke.com/cutnscratch for a podcast with Cundiff, who joined the band after seeing Hodges and Woods at No Shame Theatre, doing improvisation with what he remembers as “drum machines, exercise bikes and food.”
The Sad Cobras and The Missionaries, also from Roanoke, along with Philly’s Psalmships will have tapes out that night. Get a listen to those and more Hope for the Tape Deck releases via hopeforthetapedeck.bandcamp.com.
Harvester Performance Center Presents: Rocky Mount 140th Birthday Celebration
With Nora Jane Struthers & The Party Line, After Jack, Groova Scape
Rocky Mount’s new venue isn’t yet complete, but its manager, Gary Jackson, is already giving a hint of what’s to come with this free, outdoor show just across the way from the Harvester Performance Center. Nora Jane Struthers & The Party Line has been on a remarkable run with its debut CD, “Carnival.” NPR’s All Songs Considered blog debuted the video for the band’s “Bike Ride,” with no less a musical authority than the network’s Ann Powers calling “the summery song” a “great introduction to her beguiling, well-considered worldview.” Read all of Powers’ glowing commentary and see the video at tinyurl.com/kvksoxd.
