Seventy-four years ago (1939) when the Hotel Roanoke’s Regency Room was built/renovated, I was a mere 10-year-old girl who matriculated at what was then Our Lady of Nazareth School.

My grandmother treated me to lunch at the newly refurbished hotel.

I shall never forget this special occasion for two reasons:

1. Each guest’s room had a built-in radio!

2. The newly carpeted ballroom had zippers on the carpet so it can be removed easily and swiftly for dancing.

I am still in utter amazement by these innovative and futuristic features.

The Roanoke Times article in February (about the remodeling of the hotel’s Regency Room) was right on and so reminiscent.
