We have a new high school in Riner, and on Monday the community was invited to visit Auburn High School. It is great!
Not only is the building functional, but a sense of community was engendered as young, old, new and longtime residents met on common ground.
In our rural southwestern Montgomery County, the high school is the center of the universe. Concerts and sports events are held, life-long friendships formed and academic achievements celebrated. The celebration of white boards, smart boards and all the other bells and whistles were secondary to the memories shared of old desks with ink wells, blackboards and chalk dust.
Former students, current students and future students all mingled to see this wonder in the center of the community. The volleyball team practiced, and the cheerleaders took the tour with everyone else. No longer do we have girls’ and boys’ locker rooms … there are women’s and men’s. It was truly an intergenerational crowd.
As I sat in the light and airy library and looked out at the mountains, I thought how fortunate we are to be in a community that not only values education but that comes together to support the next generation.
