Peter Capaldi has been chosen to portray the new Doctor on BBC’s “Doctor Who.” The show, with its 50th anniversary occurring in November, has had 11 actors portray the character on television .

“Doctor Who” first aired in 1963, and tells the story of a time-travelling alien and his adventures. The show was cancelled in 1989, a TV movie was made in 1996, and the revival series started in 2005.

Capaldi is famous for playing potty-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker on the show “The Thick of It” and its follow-up movie “In the Loop.” Ironically, he was in the movie “World War Z” as the “W.H.O. Doctor.”

The change in cast on the show is explained by the Doctor’s ability to regenerate with a different appearance and personality whenever he’s seriously injured.

I’ve been a fan of “Doctor Who” since 2008, when the popular 10th Doctor was played by Scottish actor David Tennant. I absolutely fell in love with the show, but it was always so sad to see the Doctor regenerate .

Ever since I saw Capaldi in the show “Fortysomething” with actor Hugh Grant, I’ve been a fan. I’m pleased with the choice and really looking forward to how he’ll portray the Doctor.

But I’m worried about some things as well. How will the show adjust to an older Doctor? Smith was 27 when he first took the role, and Capaldi is 55 — the same age that William Hartnell was when he took the role of the first doctor in 1963.
