On page 16 of the June/July issue of Esquire magazine, readers will find the name of a familiar Roanoke store: Davidsons.
According to owner Larry Davidson, this is at least the 15th year his family’s menswear store has been honored in the magazine’s list of the finest men’s specialty stores in America. The only other Virginia stores on the list are Franco’s Fine Clothier in Richmond and Beecroft & Bull, which has locations in Richmond, Virginia Beach and Charlottesville.
Davidson said the store’s membership in a group called the Men’s Apparel Forum put it on Esquire’s radar years ago.
When Davidsons in Lynchburg closed, the business’s volume fell below what’s required to retain membership in the forum, but it kept its relationship with Esquire — along with the qualities that landed it on the “A-List” many years ago.
“The reason we are part of it is because of services we offer and certain brands we offer that are the very finest in the world,” Davidson said. He specifically mentioned the Oxxford brand and the fact that Davidsons still has skilled tailors on staff.
“You’d be hard-pressed to find stores, other than the stores listed, that offer this level of quality and service in the state,” he said.
Davidsons celebrated 100 years in business in 2010 and recently added traditional barbershop services at Jack’s Men’s Fine Grooming & Valet Services, which is located inside its South Jefferson Street location in downtown Roanoke. The store has a second location at Grand Pavilion near Tanglewood Mall.
