We live just inside the Roanoke city limits, at the base of Read Mountain.
Our little patch of woods is habitat for many high grounds wild creatures.
While taking out the trash after dark one recent evening, I came upon a spotted fawn standing alone and frightened in our back yard.
Suddenly, from the shadows, a doe made an end run to my right along the fence line, drawing attention away from her helpless newborn as it tottered into the safety of the thicket.
And some have the audacity to call them “dumb animals.”
