Well, the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise has gone and blown up Vulcan, just when we could use a bastion of logic and reason in our everyday lives.

Remember when movie houses got worried about competition from big-screen TV? So they subdivided, providing more screens but smaller ones - as TV screens were getting bigger. That's like pushing for more people to write letters, then cutting postal delivery by eliminating Saturdays.

Nature gave us a warning about our vulnerability to space rocks within a 48-hour period recently, with one asteroid whizzing within 17,100 miles of our planet, a smaller one exploding over Russia, and two more lighting up skies over San Francisco and Cuba.

Logically, we should all get to work on a way to deflect such future heavenly bodies, right? Which is about as likely as that our two major political parties will start working together for the common good, also a logical approach to our problems.

Where's Mr. Spock when we need him?
