The label read, “chopped turnip greens with diced white turnips.”

The tab was pulled. What’s that smell? Spinach!

What a surprise! It wasn’t what I’d planned for dinner, but at least we had a green vegetable.

I was reminded of a friend who bought inexpensive canned goods without labels. Her daughter thought it fun to be surprised with, “What’s for dinner? ” “Let’s open a can and see!”

We often put labels on people and are pleasantly surprised when we “open up” and get to know them.

A lesson remembered from a can of spinach. Don’t judge a book by its cover — or maybe it should be don’t count on the label revealing the contents.
