I recently learned of the passing of Alfred H. Newman of Danville at the age of 89.

He was a tireless advocate for many groups, and I was privileged to know him. At every Virginia Association of Community Services Boards conference, he would look me up to inquire about a college friend who lived in nearby Clifton Forge.

He and his dear wife were often at conferences or budget hearings advocating for funding for community services boards. He told me his business was men’s clothing, and I will always remember him most for his impeccable attire.

He spent his life in service to others and he will be greatly missed.
