Smith Mountain Lake came in third in the nation and sixth in the world in the recent Ready Set Wear It event.
Participants were asked to wear life jackets on May 18 as part of a one-day campaign to raise awareness of life jacket use and water safety.
The event drew more than 5,000 participants in 189 locations.
In national competition, SML was beaten out by Miami, Ohio, County Park District and the Nevada Department of Wildlife. SML came in sixth in the world behind the two U.S. locations and three Japan Marine Sports Foundations.
