New restaurant O’Kelly’s Deli & Pastries opened its doors Monday morning with a steady lunch crowd of mostly lake professionals.

“We are a sandwich shop and bakery,” said owner Gerald Kelly.

The deli makes its own chicken salad, tuna and pulled pork in house, as well as many of the baked goods and breads.

“Everything is made fresh daily so you know you’re getting fresh food,” Kelly said.

O’Kelly’s offers 13 varieties of sandwiches, some pinwheel-style, with prices ranging from $3.49 to $4.29 and up to $7.95 for a combo. There also are a variety of sweet danishes for $1.95 and a premium house salad with chicken for $5.95.

O’Kelly’s is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is hiring full-time and part-time cashiers and kitchen employees.

In 1984, Kelly’s father, Richard Kelly, started the sandwich business in South Carolina. Four years ago; Gerald took over the business and kept his father’s made-from-scratch bread recipe. Gerald operates two locations in his hometown of Danville, one in Chatham and another in Brosville and plans to open stores next month in Lynchburg and Roxboro, N.C. Gerald said he expanded his operation to the lake when he saw that the area needed a sandwich shop.

Ron Willard and son Ron Willard II stopped by for lunch on opening day.

“We definitely needed something that was affordable, good and quick,” the younger Willard said. He added that there are about 400 people employed in the Towne Center area, so this will add variety to their lunch options.

Holly Wood came in on her lunch break and promised to return. “I thought it was really good,” she said.
