Where were you from 1952 to ‘62? Wherever you were, you probably were rocking to the music you heard on Dick Clark’s popular TV show, “American Bandstand.”

Smith Mountain Lake will be rocking with 40 tunes from that era at the New Crusty Minstrels benefit concerts/sock hops Oct. 25-26. Words will be projected to make it easy to sing along during the concert that will be held at the Smith Mountain Lake YMCA from 7 until 10 p.m.

Some of the songs the New Crustry Minstrels is scheduled to perform include “Bristol Stomp, “At The Hop,” “Runaway,” La Bamba,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” and “Blue Suede Shoes.” Guests are encouraged to bring their own food and beverages (including alcohol).

Hot Shots Family Fun Center will sell freshly grilled burgers for those who want to purchase food on site.

Participants are reminded that high heels are not allowed in the YMCA gym, because the cushioned flooring could easily be damaged.

Proceeds from the event will go to the charities participating in the 2013 SML Charity Home Tour. Additional contributions made during the concerts to several of the charities will be doubled by benefactors, including author and part-time lake resident David Baldacci’s Wish You Well Foundation for SML Good Neighbors.

Donation checks can be written to the SML Home Tour charity of your choice or to SML Charity Home Tour, which will divide the funds among the charities as part of their home tour proceeds distributed in November.

Because the last two New Crusty Minstrels benefit concerts have sold out, early ticket sales are encouraged. They are available at RadioShack, Oar Knot, The General Store, Bedford Visitor Center, Haywood’s in Rocky Mount and Basket Case in Lynchburg.

Single ticket cost is $20, payable by cash or check to made out to SML Charity Home Tour. Groups interested in reserving a table, should email Connie Canova at canovaconnie4@gmail.com.
