A new international -themed event highlighting different cultures in the Smith Mountain Lake area is coming to Downtown Moneta. The community festival, Celebration of Nations, will be held from 2 until 8 p.m. on Aug. 24.
The event was inspired by the long-running Roanoke festival, Local Colors, according to Susan Brown, director of special events and communications at the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce.
“We want to make sure we are serving the entire area, and this was a way to bring another event to Downtown Moneta,” she said.
Brown said there will be cultural displays, including a booth on the Sudanese culture. Music and dances from all over the world will be featured, and ethnic foods such as Japanese, Chinese, Mexican and Italian will be offered for sampling and purchase.
The family -friendly event, which will be hosted by the chamber and Downtown Moneta Inc., will feature live music starting at 6 p.m. by Out of Spite. A beer garden with international beers will be available for the older crowd.
“We want to have a little bit for everyone,” Brown said.
The $5 admission for adults helps fund the kids’ area, which includes a bounce house. Kids 12 and younger are free. There will also be coupons valued at $50 and door prizes.
Businesses, clubs and groups interested in participating should call 586-9401 (ext. 201).
