Responders work to right a capsized sailboat in Pittsylvania County.
Friday, May 17, 2013
Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire/Rescue Co. volunteers , along with Officers Matthew Silicki and Edgar Huffman from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, responded to a call regarding a capsized sailboat on the cold and windy afternoon of May 5.
Upon arrival, responders found six people stranded on Bird’s Island, which is located 0.7 miles southeast of Vista Pointe in Pittsylvania County, with the sailboat drifting away.
Several younger members of the group were displaying signs of impending hypothermia. All were provided blankets, and rescue crews shared some of their clothing with the group before immediately transporting them to shore.
The sailboat was recovered, righted and towed to a launch ramp, where a fireboat pumped out the flooded hull. Others responding were Andrew Kearns, John Honaker, Dave Pearsall, George Tawes and R.J. Thompson.
