Those who frequent live-music venues around Smith Mountain Lake might recognize Melissa Roach-Stevens.

The singer/guitarist for Dragonfly, a local group that has entertained at the SML Wine Festival and other lake-area gigs, played her final show on July 27 at Mango’s . Roach-Stevens was a popular performer for the four-person band out of Lynchburg. The quartet plays a wide range of musical styles, from Guns & Roses to Etta James.

Roach-Stevens and husband Len Stevens, who works for WSET, are expecting a son in December. He will join Roach-Stevens’ 10-year-old daughter, Olivia.

“I will miss it,” she said. “But it’s time; I gotta be a mama.”

Roach-Stevens said the group was lucky enough to quickly find her replacement, Krysta Johnson, who Roach-Stevens said has a voice similar to her own.

“I saw her sing one night, and once I decided [to retire], her name was the first one that popped into my mind ,” she said.

Roach-Stevens said that although she won’t be performing, she plans on being in the audience on a regular basis.

“I’m looking forward to bringing my little boy and rocking out to Dragonfly,” she said.
