U.S. Marine Graduations
The following recently earned the title of U.S. Marine after graduating from Marine Corps recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.: Pfc. Jeremy S. Kinkead, son of David M. Johnson of Goodview and a 2009 graduate of William Byrd High School in Vinton; Marine Corps Pvt. James D. Karnes, son of Martha V. Sexton of Covington and Patrick W. Karnes of Huddleston and a 2012 graduate of Covington High School; Marine Corps Pvt. James C. Myers, son of Hollie Myers Stump of Goodview and a 2012 graduate of Staunton River High School in Moneta; and Marine Corps Pvt. Jacob T. Carter, son of Edward T. Carter Jr. of Hardy.

W. Joseph Bowman
Major W. Joseph “Joe” Bowman of Boones Mill earned his Doctor of Science degree in Emergency medicine physician assistant studies from the Baylor University Graduate School after completing a joint U.S. Army and Baylor University intensive 18-month clinical and research fellowship at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.
He is a 1987 graduate of Franklin County High School and lives in Fort Bragg, N.C., with his wife, Jacqueline Anita Wade Bowman of Rocky Mount, and their younger daughter Davina Michelle Bowman.
Their eldest daughter, Ariel Gabrielle Bowman, lives in Rocky Mount.
He is the son of Harlan and Ginger Bowman of Boones Mill and the grandson of J. Harlan Bowman and the late Edna T. Bowman of Boones Mill and the late Mabel A. and W. Raymond Morris of Rocky Mount.

Navy Fireman Stephanie L. Christy, daughter of Phaedra Hurley of Moneta and Shannon Christy of Roanoke, recently completed Joint Task Force Exercise in 3rd Fleet area of responsibilities, along with fellow sailors aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Shoup.
JTFEX is designed to test a strike group’s ability to operate in hostile and complex environments with other U.S. and coalition forces.
Christy is a 2010 graduate of Franklin County High School.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Amber L. Wiseman graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
She completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
Wiseman is the daughter of Cathey Wiseman of Vinton.

Army Pvt. Corben R. West has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.
West is the son of Danny and Karen West of Vinton.
He is a 2012 graduate of William Byrd High School in Vinton.
