Victory of da Feet

Nobody gives much thought to their feet in a job interview, but they are literally part of putting your best foot forward. How you position your feet and the footwear you choose speak volumes about your professionalism and level of interest in the position, says Lizandra Vega, author of "The Image of Success: Make a Great Impression and Land the Job You Want" (AMACOM Books, 2010).

Say two employers are seriously considering hiring you, and you suspect but aren't yet certain that one of the positions is better. Pointing a foot toward the door when speaking with the one you consider the less desirable employer "sort of lets the cat out of the bag," Vega says. Your physical position suggests you aren't fully engaged or would rather be elsewhere.

Sit with your legs uncrossed, feet together and toes pointed toward the interviewer.

Shoes that look as if they've been pounding the pavement for months might be doomed to continue doing so. "Your shoes are the bookend to your hair," she says. "People give you a once-over, from head to toe and back. Your shoes should be as tidy as your hair. It speaks to your attention to detail."
