As of today...
Last year, Norma Quarles and her husband, Carson Quarles, spent Christmas at Duke University.
Norma Quarles was being treated for multiple myeloma, a form of cancer that, while not curable, is treatable. Carson Quarles cared for his wife in the months that followed the July 2008 diagnosis.
"He was there with me. He did everything, never missed an appointment, made daily trips to the bone marrow clinic. He's a great protector," Norma Quarles said.
This December was the one-year anniversary of Quarles receiving stem cells. She is now in remission and returned to golfing over the summer.
"We are at a completely different place," Quarles said. "I mean last year, I was bald. Now I have hair."
Quarles donated to The Roanoke Times Good Neighbors Fund in honor of her husband, whom she calls "the best cancer caregiver ever." She feels that giving to the fund goes hand in hand with her husband's caregiving.
"He is wonderful. In my eyes, he's the greatest."
