Scouts continue tradition of giving
The donation from the Girl Scouts of Troop 107 to The Roanoke Times' Good Neighbors Fund was made in honor of all Girl Scouts.
The Scouts' donation wasn't intended to help them earn a badge or work toward their Gold Award. They donated just to make the world a better place, said their leader, Pat Montgomery.
The troop is composed of students in the ninth through 11th grades from Roanoke city, Roanoke Catholic and Roanoke County schools. Montgomery has been their leader for seven years.
The girls are no strangers to doing volunteer work; they earned their Silver Award last year through working with the Rescue Mission.
The troop has donated to the Good Neighbors Fund for years. The Scouts don't really need to vote on the decision any longer; they know it is a worthy cause. The Scouts earned the money they donated by selling candy, nuts and cookies.
Montgomery said the best part about being a leader is "seeing the girls grow and mature through the years and accept responsibility."
