Judy and Ron East made their annual contribution to The Roanoke Times' Good Neighbors Fund in the name of romance, in honor of Betty H. and Raymond Barton, and Doris A. and James Graham.
All three couples celebrate their 50th wedding anniversaries within six months of one another: the Grahams, then the Bartons and the Easts will celebrate on Valentine's Day.
Judy East said the Bartons were high school sweethearts and she and her husband have also been together since their school days. Betty Barton was in the same class as Judy, and James Graham was the best man in the East's wedding.
What's the secret is to staying married for 50 years? "We married for keeps," Judy East said.
The Easts have been contributing to the Good Neighbors Fund since its first year and choose someone to honor or remember with their donation. This year, Judy East said, "I've got the golden anniversaries on my mind."
