One morning each week, a small group of friends meets at Sheila's, an eatery in downtown Roanoke. They talk, have fun and plan hunting trips, a passion shared by most of the members of the group that nicknamed themselves the Thursday Morning Breakfast Club.
Bruce Welch, a lawyer, was one of the avid hunters.
"Bruce was lots of fun, and he loved and lived to be in the woods," said group member Dr. Charles Gilliland.
The group was started informally 20 years ago with members of First Presbyterian Church, Gilliland said, and grew to include other friends and neighbors. Welch joined 10 years ago, invited because he also ate breakfast most Thursdays at Sheila's.
Even after Welch learned he had cancer, Gilliland said, Welch continued his practice in downtown Roanoke, worked with clients in Franklin County, met his friends for their weekly meal and went on hunting trips with his breakfast buddies.
Welch, 62, lost his battle with the disease in September.
The group sent in a donation to The Good Neighbors Fund this year in memory of their friend.
"It just seemed like a decent thing to do," Gilliland said. "We wanted to let his family know we continue to think about them."
