Corner shot
Addison Middle School teachers Samantha Morton and Jinny Wooddall-Gainey wanted to make sure their students knew how their school got its name. After reading a Roanoke Times profile on pioneer educator Lucy Addison, they vowed to make the school's Black History Month about Addison.
An assembly last week launched the kickoff of a fund-raising campaign for the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial. Eighth grader Danielle Lee designed a logo sticker for the schoolwide campaign.
The monument will honor, among others, Oliver Hill, whose work on Brown vs. Board of Education led to the desegregation of public schools -- and who was a student of Lucy Addison.
Contributions can be made to Capitol Square Civil Rights Memorial Foundation, c/o Governor's Office, 1111 E. Broad St., Richmond, VA 23219, Attn: Judy Anderson. (Put Lucy Addison Middle School fundraiser in the check's memo line.)
