Hot dog jingle whiz rides in style

In Hollywood, Baruch Wright and his family were driven to the Warner Bros. Studio in a convoy of limousines.

He's only a kid, but Baruch Wright knows how to travel in style.

Since being named one of the five winners of Oscar Mayer's 2006 "Sing the Jingle, Be a Star" contest, the 8-year-old has enjoyed all sorts of modes of transportation, the most conspicuous of which is the famous Wienermobile, which came to town in November to follow him around his stomping grounds in Rocky Mount.

But while puttering about in the Wienermobile is pretty nifty, it doesn't hold a candle to flying in the plane that took Baruch and his family from Virginia to Los Angeles to film a commercial for Oscar Mayer.

The flight marked the first time that Baruch and his four siblings -- all but one of whom performs in the family bluegrass group, the Wright Kids -- had ever been on a plane.

"I was a little nervous," Baruch admitted about the cross-country trip. But after soaring over the Grand Canyon -- which prompted his 5-year-old brother Levi to ask their father, Barry Wright, "Are we in outer space?" -- the family touched down safely, and were ready to do it up, Hollywood-style.

During the week they spent in L.A., the Wright family made it to Universal Studios ("Jurassic Park" was their hands-down favorite ride), rubbed elbows with big stars ("We saw Lassie!" Baruch said proudly) and got the V.I.P. treatment on the Warner Bros. lot, where the "Sing the Jingle" commercial was filmed.

"They treated us top-notch," said Baruch's mother, Suzie Wright, of the limo convoy that brought the winners and their families to the studio. "It was a hoot."

"It was really neat getting to see all the other winners, and have other kids to play with," Baruch said.

The commercial promoting this year's "Sing the Jingle" contest debuted May 24 during the "American Idol" season finale. Former "Idol" contestant and Richmond native Elliott Yamin is the host for the 2007 contest.

The commercial will air on both network and cable television for the next three months. It can be found on the "Sing the Jingle" Web site, along with extra videos and skits featuring Baruch and the other winners. There's one called "The Hot Dog Hills," which finds the kids letting the Hollywood glamour get to their heads as they chat on cell phones by the pool, goof off at an arcade and lounge in the Wienermobile.

Although Baruch's part in the 15-second commercial is brief, he's just happy to have been a part of it.

"He's still reeling over his little adventure in Hollywood," Suzie Wright said of her son, who said he "definitely" has plans to return to L.A. someday.

Until then, the guitarist will be busy with the Wright Kids, who will perform at the Bassmaster Elite Series Blue Ridge Brawl at Smith Mountain Lake on June 9. Baruch's older sister Sage will sing the national anthem for the event, which is scheduled to air on ESPN2 on June 16.

The group will also perform at the Old Fiddler's Convention later this summer, following up their award-winning showing at last year's event.
