Taubman has free family day

The Taubman Museum of Art's next free family day on Saturday celebrates the exhibit "Posing Beauty in African-American Culture."

Keeping in theme with the exhibit, which explores the ways in which African-American beauty has been represented, the day is filled with related events and interactive activities.

The events begin with Roma Willis-Turner demonstrating elements of traditional African dance with modern dance at 11 a.m. in the Advance Auto Parts Auditorium.

A short lecture geared toward children follows, wherein the "Posing Beauty" exhibit will be discussed. After another dance presentation -- a mime-style praise dance by Marjoreatta Coles -- and a performance by the Northwest Child Development Center's children's choir, visitors can view the exhibit.

With 84 photographs from the 1890s to the present, "Posing Beauty in African-American Culture" features subjects ranging from ordinary to famous people, portraying a variety of attitudes about race, class, gender, popular culture and politics. The exhibit is a narrative of the ever-changing idea of what constitutes attractiveness.

Children and their families can cast votes for the image they find the most beautiful and then strike their favorite pose for the cameras, and the pictures will be projected in the museum throughout the day and featured on the museum's website.

Nikki Giovanni's poetry will be set to music by Muhandes Salaamallah and guests; gospel and hip-hop music will be combined for a performance from Dayquain and Malaika Hewitt; and families can listen to readings of children's books that relate to the exhibit.

Throughout the day, kids can create a self portrait, have their faces painted by Katherine and Isha Devine, and participate in a self-led scavenger hunt through the galleries.

"Posing Beauty in African-American Culture" is curated by Deborah Willis, chairwoman of the Department of Photography & Imaging at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
