Holiday event guide: Get in the spirit

From parades to tree lightings, there's a lot of holiday happenings in our area over the next three weeks.

Get rid of the bah humbugs and get in the holiday spirit

THURSDAY

  • Holidays at Smithfield: "Musical Memories" Through Sunday. Featuring vintage musical instruments on display, traditional music, children's activities, visits with Santa and more.   • "An Old Virginia Christmas of 1859: The Plantation Reacts to John Brown's Raid" Visitors will learn how Christmas was celebrated on a small, slave-holding Virginia tobacco plantation in 1859 and how one abolitionist helped steer the United States toward the Civil War.   • Gingerbread Festival Gingerbread creations will be displayed for visitors to vote on the best in show. The works will be up for silent auction.
