Southern Culture on the Skids performs Friday at Taubman Museum
Courtesy Yep Roc Records
It's "Dirt Track Date" time at the Taubman Museum of Art.
If you get that reference, you probably already know that Southern Culture on the Skids is performing Friday night at the Taubman's 1-Year Anniversary Bash. It's safe to assume that this will be the first time that drunken people may go nuts with fried chicken and banana puddin' -- in the museum's atrium and auditorium, at least.
What you might not know is that this band with Roanoke and New River valley ties continues build on a long tradition of indie success.
Just this past weekend, Southern Culture's performance on the NPR show "Mountain Stage" aired on stations from Alaska to Florida (and WVRU-FM, Radford). SCOTS tunes "Soulful Garage" and "It's All Over But the Shoutin' " were featured on Season One of the HBO hit series "True Blood." Horror novel monolith, Stephen King, writing for Entertainment Weekly, listed the band's "Countrypolitan Favorites" (Yep Roc) among his favorites of 2007.
The band is used to the funky sights of a venue like the Taubman, which has put on numerous live music shows in its first year. Go to scots.com/theband/assets/spain09.htm to see a photo that guitarist/singer Rick Miller shot at the City of the Arts and Sciences -- Valencia, Spain -- while touring that country earlier this year.
Go to roanoke.com/69865 and roanoke.com/105587 to hear podcasts with Miller, bassist/singer Mary Huff (Patrick Henry High School class of 1985) and drummer Dave Hartman (PH class of 1981).
