The Coal Men in downtown Roanoke

The Coal Men

The Coal Men

The Coal Men didn't come out of the mines but out of Nashville, Tenn. And they don't play country music, but a folk/rock mix with a country accent.

The band, recently featured on the Discovery Channel show "Deadliest Catch," hits Kirk Avenue Music Hall on Wednesday night with tunes from its latest record, "Kids With Songs" (Funzalo).

It's the third record in The Coal Men's 10-year history, and it reveals strong singing, good songwriting and tight playing from the trio -- lead singer/guitarist Dave Coleman, bassist/vocalist Jason "Hitch" Hitchcock and drummer/vocalist Dave Ray.

That record's "Farther Find Me Now," a dark, droning number, is featured in the "Bitter Tears" episode of "Deadliest Catch." Robert K. Oermann, a renowned Nashville music critic, called the cut a "beautifully atmospheric audio masterpiece. ... I remain a massive fan of Dave Coleman and his power-Americana trio. I can't wait for the rest of you to hear this."
