Missing out on Top 10 is a blessing in disguise

What do you think Amanda Overmyer's initial reaction was to the news that America voted her off Wednesday night? My guess is a big ol' sigh of relief that she won't have to pretend to perform in "Idol's" relentless, cheesy group sing anymore.

There were no tears, no drawn-out goodbyes (imagine what'll happen when Ramiele Malubay is kicked off!), no love lost on either side, really. Even the band messed up on her I-just-got-kicked-off-and-I-have-to-sing performance of "Back in the USSR."

The only person who truly seemed sad about it was Carly Smithson, and probably because the two were roommates this season.

Being a sucker for the rocker chicks, I was not ready for Amanda to go home. I actually think she was robbed and it should've been Kristy Lee Cook or Ramiele instead.

But part of me is glad, for her sake, that she didn't make it into the top 10.

Sure, being in the top 10 means you have a better shot at winning the whole shebang, but it also means a yearlong nationwide tour with Kristy Lee, Ramiele and those Partridge Family-style singalongs. She just doesn't belong there. (Although watching her was the highlight during those lame segments.)

Ride on, Amanda, and good luck.

The biggest shock of the night came when Ryan announced that Carly was in the bottom three performers, alongside Kristy Lee and Amanda.

Carly, in my opinion, is the female frontrunner and has been from the get-go. Apparently the judges agree because they quickly voiced their disapproval on that one.

Had Carly been sent packing, it would've been very, very hard to continue watching the rest of the season. But, because I try to maintain faith in America, I'm chalking it up to the fact that sometimes people take it for granted that the good performers will automatically get the votes.

I'm happy that Chikezie Eze, David Cook, Jason Castro, Michael Johns and Brooke White slid into the top 10 without any problems.

As for David Archuleta, I can't help but to roll my eyes.

Maybe I'm a cynic -- or more realistically -- just getting older, but I just don't get all the swooning over this kid. His voice is good, in a Josh Groban sort of way, but he reminds me of a Thai dish without any spice. Good, but boring after a few bites. The same goes for Syesha Mercado.

Kellie Pickler (season 5 finalist) returned last night to perform "Red High Heels" from her debut album, "Small Town Girl."

Kellie hasn't done that bad for herself, frankly. Her voice is a little too twangy for me, sort of a mix between Lorrie Morgan and Tanya Tucker, but it's working for her. Currently, she's on tour with Rascal Flatts and is working on a sophomore album. Maybe there's hope for Kristy Lee afterall, if they'd just let her sing a country song!

Thankfully, the Lennon/McCartney disaster is behind us. I don't know whose idea it was to make the participants sing Beatles songs two weeks in a row, but it was not a good one -- for the performers or the viewers.

Let's just hope that next week isn't a tribute to Barry Manilow.

Do you agree with Wendy? Tell her on the "Idol Times" blog at blogs.roanoke.com.
