So, what you’re saying is, 2007 was the year of Kanye and Carrie?

Got it.

More than 660 ballots were cast in The Roanoke Times fifth annual Music Poll, which invited readers to select their favorite music and artists from the past year. A hip-hop king and a country idol topped the vote-getters.

Kanye West dominated the voting in the “National Scene,” earning first place in seven categories, a new Roanoke Times Music Poll record. He’s bound to be proud. West won for best artist, best album, best song and best male performer and swept the hip-hop categories.

Country chanteuse Carrie Underwood won five firsts for best female performer, best country artist, best country album, best country song and best video. Fellow “American Idol” alum Chris Daughtry did very well in the voting, as did the Foo Fighters.

Nothing broils voters’ burgers like the “Local Scene” categories, though. Last year, the best band category was decided by one measly vote. This year, the Seed left no doubt in voters’ minds. They won big, becoming the first back-to-back winner since Burning Bridges in 2003-04.

Lisa Martin of the band Monkey Fuzz was named best female vocalist for the second straight year. The Seed’s Steven Lewis won best male vocalist and TK-421’s “5 Live” was voted best local album. WROV won best local radio station, making it five-for-five in poll history.

Another fan favorite was Britney Spears, who continued to pile up more "worsts" than a Brooklyn deli — worst artist, worst album, worst video. Poor Britney. At least 2008 provides a fresh start. Perhaps this time next year she’ll be as beloved as Carrie.

Or maybe not.
