When the subject is where we live, an old saying can be true: The devil is in the details.
It’s in the faux finish we select for our walls and how we choose to light a room. But even more so, it’s about the little things we use to personalize our spaces and, well, make them feel like home: the antique desk that belonged to a late relative, a martini glass collection, framed photographs of vacations gone by.
During a two-day tour this weekend, the Arts Council of the Blue Ridge will offer a glimpse into seven households in downtown Roanoke, including artist John Reburn’s three-level apartment next to the Art Museum of Western Virginia site. In each case, the homes were designed by giving a new twist and fresh details to an old space.
“I’m hoping people are reinventing how they use these spaces,” said Reburn as he took a coffee break in his kitchen on a recent rainy morning. “I could never live in a traditional kind of house.”
Neither could the rest of these Roanokers. Now, meet a few of the homeowners and city dwellers on the tour.
Homeowners Joel Sink and Greg Sprinkle
Sink, a 43-year-old art director at WDBJ (Channel 7), and his partner, Sprinkle, 29, who works for Allstate, have combined their lives in a new one-bedroom dwelling at the Campbell Garage Lofts.
- Location: 319 Campbell Ave. S.W.
- How long: Since June
- Size: 1,100 square feet
- Decor: One foot in Asia and the other in the Caribbean. Includes granite counter tops , sealed concrete floors, stainless steel appliances.
- Sink’s favorite thing: His family’s dining room set. It once belonged to his mother and grandmother. “My grandmother was really into entertaining,” he said.
Homeowner Brandon Dooley
Dooley, a 26-year-old real estate agent for the Real Estate Group, moved back to Southwest Virginia after a stay in Hilton Head, S.C. The Vinton native now calls the Campbell Garage Lofts home and Joel Sink and Greg Sprinkle neighbors.
- Location: 319 Campbell Ave. S.W.
- How long: Since June
- Size: 1,100 square feet
- Decor: Classic Roanoke. Includes iron works for a headboard, granite counter tops, mirrored accents and a custom glass shower.
- His favorite thing: the mix of old and new. His one special thing, Dooley said, is “my antique furniture. They all have different stories. I spent hours scouring antique stores in Virginia. It has been great to put it together.”
Homeowner John Reburn
Reburn, 42, left sunny Los Angeles for Roanoke where his new neighbor, the Art Museum of Western Virginia, is under construction. It took six months of work to get Reburn’s home to his liking.
- Location: 108 Salem Ave. S.W .
- How long: 2 1/2 years
- Size: 1,200 square feet
- Decor: “My theme is the lives I had in the last 20-some years. I prefer things a little messy, a little convoluted and a little mixed.” Includes one bedroom, a rooftop patio, granite counter tops, skylights and a fireplace.
- His favorite thing: the Jesus collection. “I love iconography,” Reburn said of the many ways Jesus’ image is interpreted in his collection, which includes statues, pictures and paintings.
Homeowners J.J. and Samantha White
J.J., a 32-year-old executive director of Dale Carnegie Training, and his wife, Samantha, a 27-year-old admissions director at the Berkshire Healthcare Center in Vinton, lived in a town house in Roanoke County before a quick tour on Day Avenue in early spring turned their attention to the renovated 100-year-old home.
- Location: 433 Day Ave. S.W. in the Miller’s Hill neighborhood
- How long: Since July
- Size: 2,700 square feet
- Decor: Still a work in progress. “When we moved in everything was done,” J.J. White said. Includes a garage, fireplaces, granite counter tops, hardwood floors and screened-in porches.
- J.J. White’s favorite thing: the staircase. “It’s handcrafted, oak, original, 100 years old,” he said.
Renter Grayson Kellam
Kellam, 29, moved to the Star City this summer from Portland, Ore. Recently her life changed, and now she’s moving out of her rental space to a home in Virginia Beach. The one-bedroom apartment is owned by Vinton resident Steve Musselwhite, who bought it in January.
- Location: 309 S. Jefferson St.
- How long: Since June
- Size: 2,300 square feet
- Decor: “I made it my own,” Kellam said about her arrangement of antique and modern pieces. “Now it’s time to move on. I have a kind of whimsical taste. I love mermaids, cool mermaids.” Includes a step-in hot tub, handcrafted marble shower, mirrored closet doors and a fireplace.
- Her favorite thing: the woodwork. “It gives the place a lot of character,” she said.
