AKA: the TV cartoon

The details: Greedy businessmen try to stop that fearless race car driver, Speed (Emile Hirsch), from steering his Mach 5 over hill and dale to victory. And the Japanese cartoon gets a colorful live-action remake from the Wachowski brothers ("Matrix").

"WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS"

In theaters: Opens today

NEW! But could be: that wacky rom-com "Laws of Attraction"

The details: Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher get drunk and get hitched in Vegas, a marriage just waiting for a quickie divorce. Then they hit the jackpot and the judge rules that no one gets a cent till they serve "six months hard marriage."

"THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN"

The details: Four English schoolchildren return to the fantasy land of Narnia, where they join the young, foreign-sounding Prince Caspian and do battle with the evil King Miraz. It's the second installment in the C.S. Lewis epic.

The details: After two decades in retirement, Indy (Harrison Ford) is back and chasing a mystical treasure in the Amazon jungles. In a whip snap, he's fighting Soviet agents and an icy-eyed villainess played by Cate Blanchett.

The details: Four years after leaving HBO, the sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her best girlfriends take their cosmo-fueled adventures -- marriage, pregnancy, bikini waxing -- to the big screen. Do Big and Carrie tie the knot? Does Steve cheat on Amanda? As Carrie would say, "I couldn't help but wonder ... "

The details: A big-bellied panda with "no kung fu" (Jack Black) joins an elite herd of animal martial arts masters to fight a fearsome snow leopard. One prediction about this animated comedy: Expect the disco song "Kung Fu Fighting" and a funny training montage.

The details: "There are forces at work beyond our understanding," Mark Wahlberg says in the trailer for this thriller, about a mysterious virus sweeping the planet. The writer-director M. Night Shyamalan ("The Sixth Sense") returns after his 2006 flop "Lady in the Water."

The details: Mike Myers plays a self-help guru with a devilish streak and a Rasputin beard, setting up a movie's worth of slapstick and zingers. Local reference: A hockey player named Darren Roanoke (played by the actor Romany Malco) calls on the guru to help patch things up with his wife.

"GET SMART"

In theaters: June 20

AKA: the 1960s TV comedy

The details: The bumbling agent Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) must save the world from the clutches of the evil crime gang KAOS, setting up a second movie's worth of slapstick and zingers. With Anne Hathaway as his sexy sidekick, Agent 99.

"WALL-E"

The details: WALL-E is the loneliest robot on Earth, left to clean up after humanity abandons the planet but forgets to turn him off. Then a she-droid named EVE lands. The makers of "Finding Nemo" offer another animated comedy, this one mostly word-free.

The details: Wes (James McAvoy) is a regular guy, plucked from his regular life by the Fraternity, a secret society of assassins that requires his untapped killing skills. With a fully tattooed Angelina Jolie as his tutor.

The details: What do you get when you cross a superhero with an antihero? The booze-swilling Hancock (Will Smith). His crime-fighting high jinks get him in trouble, and he needs a consultant (Jason Bateman) to help improve his image.

The details: Batman (Christian Bale) sweeps organized crime out of Gotham till he crosses a loony, laughing criminal. The late Heath Ledger, chillingly made up as The Joker, takes one of his final bows on the big screen.

The details: Meryl Streep is the mama, and Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth or Stellan Skarsgard might be the daddies in this Greek Isles romp about a bride's search for her real dad, set to the

music of ABBA and based on the stage musical.

"STEP BROTHERS"

The details: Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are unemployed man-boys and, after their parents marry, feuding stepbrothers who share the same room. Physical and potty humor ensue. (In what may be the summer's biggest cringe, Ferrell besmirches a drum set.)

"THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE"

AKA: the TV show, the 1998 movie

The details: Details are few about this secretive sequel. Though rumor has it that the film investigates the relationship between FBI agents Scully and Mulder, aka Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny. The title? A reference to the poster in Mulder's office.

"THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR"

In theaters: Aug. 1

AKA: "Mummy" III

The details: This time, the world is threatened by an evil Chinese emperor mummy (Jet Li) who is cranky after waking up from a couple millennia of sleep. Then Brendan Fraser gets chased across Asia.

"THE ROCKER"

The details: Rainn Wilson gets a second chance to rock, 20 years after he was kicked out of a hair-metal band on the verge of success. Now he's behind the drums of his nephew's band. Fans of "The Office" take note.

The details: Ben Stiller pulls triple duty: He wrote, directed and stars in this comedy about movie stars in a jungle combat film who wind up in a real guerilla war. With Robert Downey Jr. in blackface and a cameo from Tom Cruise as a balding, clueless studio chief.

The details: Anna Faris stars as a Playboy bunny who gets booted from the mansion (at the ancient age of 27). She moves in with a nerdy sorority and tries to help them save their house, teaching lessons in popularity along the way.
