Roanoke's poshest possibilities

See the photos in this pdf file

Just imagine what you and your darling one could do this Valentine's Day if money were no object. Do you imagine trips to faraway places? Or would you want to have a little quiet time away from cellphones, pagers and e-mail?

Now think about having a luxurious few days in Roanoke. "In Roanoke?" you ask yourself. Yes! It can be done! So crack open a bottle of bubbly, get the caviar out of the fridge and imagine your very best Robin Leach voice narrating as we tour some of the sweetest suites (and rooms) that our area has to offer for a truly romantic weekend getaway.

The Hotel Roanoke

The Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center is where we began our search for a swanky getaway.

The Governor's Suite is a two-bedroom, two-bathroom suite that also boasts a living room, dining room, kitchen, Jacuzzi tub, fireplace and its very own private patio and private entrance from the elevator, if you don't want to deal with the common folk. Prices start at $490 a night, depending on the time of year.

The Hotel Roanoke is also offering a more affordable package specifically for Valentine's Day, good this weekend or next. You can start your stay with a room for two and get sparkling wine and strawberries upon your arrival. End the getaway with breakfast for two and a late checkout (based upon availability). Prices for this package start at $150 for two people, but you can tack on a four-course dinner in the elegant Regency Room for an extra $74 (for two).

Fun fact: If you adore your bed at the Hotel Roanoke -- or the linen, or even your alarm clock -- you can order it online for your very own home. Everything in the room (well, maybe not the larger furniture) can be bought, even the soap from the bathroom (for a cool $15 per bar). Check it out at www.hiltontohome.com.

MORE HOTELS

The Maridor

The Maridor is a bed and breakfast located in the heart of Grandin Village, right here in Roanoke. While there isn't a Valentine's package, you can add on many of the traditional Valentine's Day amenities to the price of a regular stay, such as champagne, fresh flowers and Godiva chocolates. The staff also can book "days of beauty" for you at area salons. Base prices range from $104 to $145.

Pictured: The E.R. Johnson Suite is named after the original owner of the home, and it's often chosen as a honeymoon suite. The rate is $145 a night.

The Homestead

If you're willing to drive a little bit to get away from it all, The Homestead in Hot Springs also has a posh Valentine's Day package. Fresh flowers, champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries are offered on your arrival. You can have romantic meals in the 1766 Grille or their dining room, which also serves breakfast. Also included is a 50-minute Swedish massage for two. A two-night stay for two people comes to about $1,464.

Other neat stuff: Want to remember the occasion? Included in the package price is a photo sitting for a commemorative photo that comes with its own keepsake frame. And if you and your sweetheart are dying to get into the outdoors, you can take cross-country skiing tours with a picnic lunch for an additional fee. Skiing not your thing? Then you can try the snowshoe tours.

Nightly rates range from $575 to $875, depending on the time of year.
