The Virginia Museum of Transportation is showing off seven auto "celebrities," which include the 1959 Cadillac ambulance from "Ghostbusters," the General Lee Dodge Charger from the 2005 movie "The Dukes of Hazzard" and the 1974 Ford Gran Torino from the '70s cop drama "Starsky and Hutch," on Saturday to celebrate the 10th annual Star City Motor Madness.

The Saturday night celebration party and "Hollywood Star Cars" exhibit are the newest additions to Motor Madness, a weekend of classic cars and cruising whose proceeds benefit the museum. The exhibit makes its Roanoke debut alongside 10 of the museum's most prized in-house classics. The museum's black-topped, yellow-wheeled Piedmont Touring Car, one of only two in existence, will be shown, according to Fran Ferguson, director of development at the museum.

In the past decade, Motor Madness weekend and sponsors have raised $250,000 for the museum's auto gallery. This year, Motor Madness hopes to raise more than $40,000 for the museum, according to event co-founder and museum board member Robert Bennett. Proceeds will also benefit the Child Health Investment Partnership of Roanoke Valley.

"The committee thought this would be a great way to celebrate being in existence for 10 years," Bennett said about the success of Star City Motor Madness, an independent event that supports the museum.

The Advance Auto Parts Automotive Gallery was named and opened to the public three years ago, but this Saturday marks its formal opening, according to Tom Cox, Motor Madness co-founder and museum board member.

Star City Motor Madness attracts people from all over the world who want to ride "in the spirit of the automobile." According to Cox, one registered driver is from Nova Scotia.

The Hollywood Star Cars exhibit is on loan from the Lindisfarne Collection through July 31 and is sponsored by Grand Home Furnishings.

On Friday, thousands of classic automobiles are expected to participate in Berglund Coca-Cola Cruise Night on Williamson Road.

The Car and Truck Show -- sponsored by Grand Home Furnishings, First Team Auto Mall and Lanford Brothers Co. -- will feature hundreds of vintage rides parked on Jefferson Street. On Saturday, June 25, register a vehicle in Star City Motor Madness or bring a lawn chair downtown from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to enjoy the sights, entertainment, and silent auction.
